Happy birthday?

It's my baby's 8th birthday ... I can't say the last eight years have been one big glorious spot of sunshine: She's tempestuous, loud, volatile and self-centered and even self-loathing. But she's also loving, sunny, bright, smart, creative -- sometimes she takes my breath away in her complexity. Ah, such is parenthood.

On to today's and this weekend's myriad events.

It's Heritage Days 2007 through Sunday in downtown Olmsted Falls in the Grand Pacific Junction. Admission is free except for some events that require tickets. The theme is HAT’S OFF TO OLMSTED, so wear a hat during the festival. It's Kids Day today with activities and shows all day, and other fun stuff all weekend. Go to http://grandpacificjunction.com/heritage.shtml.

Get out that kayak or canoe and head to Lake Metroparks' Fairport Harbor Lakefront Park for the World Record Canoe and Kayak Challenge Saturday at 9. In case of inclement weather, attempt will take place at 9 a.m. on Sunday.
